Ricoh logoPreviously, Ricoh Americas Corporation introduced a series of single-function printers that use gel instead of liquid inks, GelSprinter. Just the other day, Ricoh launched an addition to its GelSprinter series, desktop color multifunction printers: the Ricoh GX3000S, GX3000SF and the GX3050SFN. No picture is yet available.

What’s new? These are the first MFPs to utilize the GelSprinter technology combining the quality and performance of laser printing with the convenience and the vivid color of an inkjet. The MFPs use viscous-ink cartridges that offer higher yields compared to dye- based ink cartridges to reduce cost-per-page. Another advantage of viscous-ink is that the printhead never needs to be replaced.

How about specifications? The new series provides standard color copying, printing and scanning on all models, while embedded network connectivity is standard only on the GX3050SFN. All MFPs have speed of 29 pages per minute for both color and black & white at true 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution.

Ricoh says owners of GX3000S, GX3000SF and GX3050SFN can benefit from the low total running costs thanks to Level Color Mode. This feature reduces ink density up to 35 percent for graphics and images leaving the text well readable. Also, this mode makes color cost-per-page the same or less than black & white.

With Ricoh GX3000S, GX3000SF and GX3050SFN, the series has gone “green” and now meets Energy Star guidelines and provides supply-saving features such as:

  • power saving sleep modes,
  • duplex and combine copy modes and
  • minimal ozone emissions.

The GX3000S is available at a suggested retail price of $549.00 and the GX3000SF and GX3050SFN, which includes fax and scan, are available for $699.00 and $849.00, respectively.

Panasonic launched two new multifunction devices into market: the KX-MB271 and the KX-MB781.
panasonic-kx-mb781.jpgPanasonic KX-MB271 as a decent multifunction device can scan, copy and print. It is built around a monochrome laser printer engine that can print 18 ppm at a resolution of up to 600 by 600 dpi, with a claimed warm-up time of 15 seconds. The scanner scans at up to 600 by 1200 dpi and can automatically crop scans to the size of the scanned document.

The printer has a built-in document feeder that handles up to 20 sheets of paper. The KX-MB271 comes with the text recognition software that can convert scanned documents into text. As for paper capacity, there is only one paper tray for up to 250 sheets of paper. The KX-MB271 uses a USB port to connect to a PC, but there is no networking option available, so the device cannot be shared over a network.

Panasonic KXMB781 is no different from the KXMB271 in terms of basic characteristics, but it supports sending and receiving faxes, and has an Ethernet adapter for networking. This enables users to send faxes straight from the desktop over the network. Scanned documents and received faxes can be sent over the network as well.

Both printers support Windows from 98 to Vista, and don’t support Apple Macs.

Panasonic KX-MB271 and the KX-MB781 are priced $149.99 and $199.99 respectively.

In several Asian countries, HP released a new multifunction printer, Photosmart C8180.

While printing on CD or DVD is not something astonishing in modern MFP, ability to actually write, or record disks is only embodied in this new device.

HP Photosmart C8180 Disk Recording Multifunction PrinterPhotosmart C8180 in an inkjet printer capable of copying and faxing. The printing speeds of the reach 33 pages per minute in color and 34 pages per minute in monochrome mode. The resolutions supported are 4800 x 1200 dpi for color and 1200 dpi in black and white mode. The scanning module features resolution of 4800 x 4800 dpi.

HP Photosmart C8180 sports 3,5-inch color LCD, supports printing and recording on disks from most common memory cards: CompactFlash, Memory Sticks, SDHC, SD/MMC, xD-Picture Card.

The price of the printer varies from country to country and makes up $500-600.

The support of reading from CD and DVD seems reasonable as these disk formats are wide-spread. But the idea of recording from one convenient like flash card to less convenient media like CD doesn’t make sense to me. Looks like HP is testing in Asia if such device finds its user, before luanching the product in US and EU.
