It can be tempting to chuck ink cartridges in the trash when they’re empty. Simple and easy, we get that. But, this method is far from being the most sustainable option out there.

For the sake of the future, it’s important to be responsible in our choices — ink cartridges and all. Luckily, it’s easier than ever to recycle ink cartridges responsibly.

Why Recycle Ink Cartridges?

First up, it’s important to understand the why. Did you know only 9% of plastic actually ends up recycled? It takes more than 400 years for plastic to fully break down, meaning they’re just piling on and on in landfills.

Plastic pollution can get into waterways, ecosystems, and cause serious health-related problems. In fact, Harvard studies have shown that certain chemicals in plastic can actually be leached out and contaminate our food and water sources.

• Drop Off In-Store

Retailers including Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, and Walmart participate in free cartridge recycling programs. Just drop off your cartridges, and you’ll be done.

They may also take printers and other old electronics as well. 

Most of the time, you’ll find a drop-off location near the printers and toner. When in doubt, ask the customer service desk for help.

• Consider Refilling Cartridges

You can also reuse your cartridges to cut down on plastic waste. Original brand ink cartridges can be refilled and reused provided that you have the correct (and compatible) ink refill kit. These kits will include a bottle of ink, a syringe, a screw tool, plastic gloves, and refilling instructions.  

As long as you follow the directions, you’ll have a perfectly usable fill cartridge in no time. On top of saving the planet, you’ll be saving yourself money too.

• Mail Empty Cartridges In

Companies are becoming more environmentally-conscious these days. Toner cartridge producers are no exception. To recycle cartridges by mail, consult the original packaging that your toner cartridge came in. There should be a mailable envelope disclosed. 

Fill out the information, secure the envelope in a box, and send it on its way. If there is no envelope or contact information available online, you may have to use one of the methods listed above.
