New items are equipped with 8.9-inch LCD touch control panel with large buttons and the ability to adjust the position. An intuitive user interface with large icons allows you to monitor the state of MFP, to navigate through menus and control operations. On the bright screen, you can view the first page of the scanned document and cancel the transaction if an error occurs, and bright LED indicators show the current status of the device. Among the standard features, there is a function print / scan to USB-drive, a network folder and email.

Each of the models is ready to work with paper of different sizes (up to size SRA3) and has a proprietary Samsung Scan Technology. Among other things, the devices can print images with a selected color or without a certain color, which will be replaced with white (that can save toner when printing images with a dark background).

Pressing the button starts saving Eco print mode that reduces toner consumption.

Advanced security features include password authentication, data encryption and protection from penetration into the office network.

All MFPs come with pre-installed special software, which consists of SmarThru Workflow applications (helps with documents work), SyncThru (allows you to monitor and diagnose the condition of the device, as well as manage its operation in a remote location), SecuThru (ensures secure transmission and printing of confidential information) and CounThru (provide information on the amount of press and money spent).

There are two kinds of toner cartridges designed to work with this printer: standard yield and high yield cartridges. The former can produce and to 15,000 pages and latter carry toner enough for 20,000 pages.

The developer promises, mobile phone photographers will love the MobilePrint for the quick and easy work with images. When using devices with iOS, photos can be printed from a photo album or directly from the camera, and the fans of Android can print images from the photo gallery of theur mobile devices. The Samsung application will help frequent travelers to quickly print out an electronic ticket of flight confirmation.

The new application for printing allows users to receive and edit documents, scanned using Samsung MFP. One only has to put the document in the MFP and send it to the device for quick viewing. Further, the application allows you to choose the quality of the scanned image, change the file type or toggle between color and black and white scanning.

According to the developers, the printers are easy to use, have high reliability and performance, which facilitates and accelerates the work in the office environment. It is no secret that this aspect is very important for consumers when they choose a printer, as well as the machine’s operational time. Having this in mind, Samsung engineers have designed their new products so that the paper does not not stuck.

“Whoa!” you might say, “best printers of 2006 at the end of 2009?” — “Yes, why?” we’d reply, “they are still as good as back then, yet they are now a time-proven choice for those on the look for a printing device.”

That having been said, let’s get down to our today’s participants.

The Black-and-Whites

In the Black and White Printer category the HP LaserJet 5200 was picked as a winner by voters at SmallBusinessComputing.com. This machine prints 35 pages per minute, support standard double-sided and wide-format printing, as well as the Instant-On technology, which lets the first page out in 10 seconds after you pressed the power button.

Why the Color LaserJet 2605dn? a) It’s a professional, network-ready color printer b) with top speed of 12ppm for black and white and 10ppm for color c) with 64 MB of built-in expandable to 320 MB memory, d) hi-speed USB port and built-in Ethernet print server, e) etc.

Each of the HP Color LaserJet 2605dn toner cartridges (cyan, yellow, magenta and black) is designed to last for around 2,000 pages and the black cartridge good for 2,500.

Our vice-winner, the Xerox Phaser 6120, also has features to bolster:

• Printing speed of up to 5 ppm in color and up to 20 ppm in monochrome
• 2,400 dpi enhanced resolution
• Standard network connectivity
• 128 MB memory as standard

There are two sets of color toner cartridges for the Phaser 6120. Color cartridges of standard yield set last for up 1,500 pages, while their higher yield sibling contain 3 times more toner for 4,500 pages. The black cartridge comes with singles yield type of 4,500 pages per cartridge.

The Multi-functions

Finally, the ones that do it all – print, scan and copy – the Multi-functions. This comes as no surprise the HP is the winner again with its Officejet 4315 All-in-One.

The HP’s jack-of-all-trades is cheap, compact, stylish and does color printing – what else is needed for a small or home office? However, it still has one drawback – the scanner is sheet-fed, not flat bed, so you can’t scan books with it. The print and copy speed is 20 pages per minute for black only and up to 14 ppm in color. According to HP, the 4315 can easily handle up to 1,500 pages a month.

The HP Officejet 4315 supplies account for a pair of black inkjet cartridges of smaller and larger yield (150 and 220 pages respectevely) and single color cartridge that lasts for 140 standard pages.

A Xerox machine holding the second prize has also become a common sight. This time it’s Xerox WorkCentre 4118. The runner-up is different from the winner in many ways. It’s a laser, and it’s monochrome, which, by the ways, generally suggests lower cost per page. It features a flatbed scanner, which does enable you to scan books and magazines. The Xerox also has a larger paper feed tray to hold 550 pages (compared to 100 sheets of the HP printer).

As any laser printing device, the WorkCentre 4118 consumes toner cartridges to makes prints. The only piece of supply required is Xerox 006R01278 toner cartridge, and you can print as many as 8,000 impressions with it.

Printing

According to manufacturer’s specification, the CLX-6200FX can print as fast as 20 A4 or 21 letter pages per minute in both color and black-and-white. The real-life speed, as it always happens, is a bit slower – 18 ppm, which is an average result.

Another speed factor is worth mentioning – the warm up time. It takes about a whole minute for Samsung CLX-6200FX to make first print. Way too long for a modern printer.

The printing quality can be assessed as good. The text is crisp and readable, though may look a bit fuzzier compared to that of competitors’ models.

Color output is better than average with good color reproduction. An eagle-eye viewer may find a little banding on high-resolution color prints, but this artifact is not consistent and really takes a lot of staring to detect.

Network printing and direct printing from a USB-drive are supported.

Copying

The copier features allows doing all the things a little office photocopier can to do: edge-erase, collation, zoom, etc. You can also select what type of original (image, text, etc.) you have. The copying resolution is fixed at 600×600 dpi.

A copy made from a printed off image was good but a little grainy.

The copying speed for text originals is the same of printing – 18 pages per minute.

Scanning

The scanner is capable of up to 36-bit 600×1200 dpi of optical) or 4800×4800 dpi enhanced resolution when used in TWAIN mode. The resolution is adjustable between 100 and 600 dpi for scan-to-USB/PC/e-mail modes.

Samsung CLX-6200FX can scan documents and save them directly onto the USB drive. You can also scan a document to a networked computer having installed the SmartThru software. File formats supported include PDF, BMP, TIFF and JPEG..

Pressing the “Scan” button will prompt a dialogue on the 2-line LCD when you can set mode, resolution, destination, and so on. While PDF and JPG output worked fine, it seemed to have some troubles with TIF output as the resulted file was impossibly small.

The printer is rather heavy (100 lb.) and requires a sturdy place to put it on. Optional features include duplexing automatic document, optional hard disk and wireless print server functionality.

The printer comes shipped with the standard yield Samsung toner cartridges (2500 black or 2000 color (cyan, magenta, yellow) pages. There are also high-yield toners which yield 5500 (black) or 5000 letter-sized pages (CMY). Having learned that, let’s see what’s more there is.

The SCX-4725FN is marketed as a network device. The manufacturer says that with this printer you can “be fully connected with all of your departments and enjoy the easy-to-use, network-enabled solutions that the SCX-4725FN offers”, that’s not quite so. While you can easily print over the network, there’s not support for network scanning and faxing. You have to connect it through USB if you want to use it full.

Speaking of scanning. Color scanning option is not supported, too, so you are limited to black-and-white document scans only. However, for somebody this limitation won’t be critical.

One of the most important features SCX-4725FN has is toner save mode. When active it reduces toner consumption by up to 30%, giving you more print outs per Samsung toner cartridge. Despite the manufacturer’s claims of retaining the print quality in toner save mode, the printouts do look really toned down.

Another point of notice is long warm-up time. It takes the printer several minutes to get ready from stand by mode.

But there’s also a bright side: Samsung SCX-4725FN offers a bunch of copying options.

First, clone copying. This feature enables copying the same image in reduced size on one printed page.

Next is favorite copy feature that allows making specialized copies easily. You just store a few functions as “Favorite Copy.” Instead of requiring multiple steps to select copy options, pressing the “Favorite Copy” button requires only one step to complete the assigned special copy.

With auto-fit copying you can expand a small image to fit the printed page and double sided copies can now be put on one side. The latter copying function allows you to consolidate copies without hassle or wasting time or paper.

It’s also worth mentioning that SCX-4725FN is ENERGY STAR compliant. This means you are assured that your Samsung model is helping the environment by using less energy while saving you money.

There are some reasons to that.

First off, what do you actually want a printer to do? Right, print documents. That’s what Samsung ML-2571N does well. And fast.

Well, 24 pages per minute, a printing speed claimed by the manufacturer, are not there. But same goes for any claimed print speed of any printer by any maker. The real printing speed reaches decent 16-17 pages per minute, which puts the printer above its counterparts from Canon and HP.

Second (probably should go first for some of us), Samsung ML-2571N is cheap to own. The printer was priced modest $200 when it was first launched into market. Now you would have to pay only $120 to $180, depending on what e-shop you choose, to become an owner of this printer. Seems like a bargain price.

Apart from low upfront costs, the printer is cheap to maintain.
