Canon introduced a new compact photo printer, the Selphy CP800, which allows quick and easy creation of professional-quality photos at home. The new mode replaces the Selphy CP780 and has a number of improvements. The printer made in a slim and elegant design is equipped with some creative features and is much easier to use.

Selphy CP800 is suitable for those who want a convenient printer making high-quality photos with a touch of a button. The printer comes in black or white body colors. The printer has an ergonomic and friendly interface, large buttons and a rotating 2.5-inch LCD screen. It can print directly from memory cards or any device that supports PictBridge standard, for example, digital or video camera. The Selphy CP800 also prints from a USB drive or mobile phone.

The printer has an auto image stabilization, which analyzes faces, contrast and brightness of images, and then corrects the deficiencies for brighter and clearer pictures. The effect of “smooth skin” may hide the faults of the skin when creating portraits, and by manually adjusting the brightness you can improve the quality of prints.

The thermal sublimation technology of ink transfer creates a smooth transition of tones and makes the image glossier. The ink dries instantly, so photos are ready for use right away. According to the company, a special coating protects pictures from moisture and keeps brightness and color saturation for 100 years if stored in the album. Selphy CP800 supports printing on media of different sizes, including postcards, L6 and credit card formats.

Selphy CP800 offers a variety of options for layouts. The ID Photo Layout allows you to print photos for documents on one sheet. Mixed layout allows you to combine photos into original compositions to demonstrate you creative abilities. The “My Colors” function give even more room for creativity providing different color settings: Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Positive Film and Black-And-White.

An optional battery for model Selphy CP800 provides mobile printing on the go.

Canon has announced two leading products in the PIXMA lineup: the PIXMA MG8140 and the PIXMA MG6140. Their printheads are created using Canon FINE technology, and have 6 separate ink tanks, including a gray ink. They provide a professional level of photo printing in both grayscale and color.

Both models are able to print a 10×15 cm color photo borderless in approximately 20 seconds and have the printing speed of 12,5 / 9,3 images per minute in monochrome / color mode, according to the ISO ESAT standard. PIXMA MG8140 can scan and re-print 35 mm films and slides. In the two models is implemented an improved system of working with printing media: two paper path, double-sided printing and direct printing on a suitable DVD, CD or Blu-ray disk.

The new Intelligent Touch System by Canon makes the printer easy, allowing you to manage them using the touch panel. User interface is backlit to facilitate navigation and show what functions and operations are available at the moment. The new models also implement the Quick Operation system, which provides the fast and direct access to frequently used functions. Installation menu and function buttons make it easy to call the required options directly from the main screen.

The PIXMA MG8140 and the PIXMA MG6140 ship with Full HD Movie Print Function, enabling to print an image by selecting individual frames from Full HD videos shot on Canon digital cameras. The program provides the video images detail level at up to 1080p resolution, and can also improve resolution and reduce noise levels to ensure optimum quality with the help of Frame Enhancement technology.

In addition, users of printers can take advantage of the extended version of the Easy-PhotoPrint EX. Now this software has a direct access to Flickr. Easy-WebPrint EX provides a simple and intelligent printing of Web pages, allowing you to select, cut and combine the content of different sites in a single document–from fitting to one page to creating a booklet.

The PIXMA MG8140 and the PIXMA MG6140 standard supports Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Thanks to IrSimple, PictBridge, and Bluetooth (as an option) the printers can connect to compatible digital cameras, camera-equipped mobile phones and camcorders.

Hard times are coming to those who like to abuse copy machines, soon they’ll have to look for workaround. And all because Canon Japan together with Hitachi introduces a new security system for office printers based on biometric human parameters. Simply put, now to scan or print a document, you will need to confirm you identity with a fingerprint.

The creators claim that the technology isneeded to patch the vulnerabilities that are characteristic for access with password or magnetic cards. Indeed, a sheet of paper with a password scribbled on it or a card may be dropped anywhere, but you can hardly leave your thumb on the table.

The company is planning to introduce the technology into operation on the basis of Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE line of multifunction printers. Estimated cost of the devices is about $1460. Protected printers will be available on the Japanese market any day. Perhaps, the technology will find its place in other markets, in addition to printer access security.

Upload your image, select the PIXMA of your choice and wait for the superior quality results of a Canon inkjet to be delivered to your door,” reads the Canon Your Print microsite.

How to take advantage of Your Print scheme:

    * Visit to the Your Print website and upload your own print (or selected from menu)
* Choose the printer you would like to trial (you can choose from the following PIXMA printers: MP990, iX4000, MP640, MP550, MP560, iP3600, iP4700, MX860, MP490, MP250, MP270, iP1900, iP2600, MX320, MX330)

Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan, Inc. will be celebrating 20 years of practicing the recycling of toner cartridges this year.

According to the feature, the Canon Toner Cartridge Recycling Program was launched in 1990, then the first of its kind. Eight years earlier, in 1982, Canon came out with the first personal copiers that made use of replaceable all-in-one toner cartridges. In line with the company’s thrust towards “living and working for the common good,” as well as having gained awareness regarding environmental issues such as the reduction of waste and the effective use of resources, the Toner Cartridge Recycling Program was introduced.

In the twenty years since its inception, the Canon Toner Cartridge Recycling Program has expanded its reach, collecting empty cartridges in 23 countries worldwide. As of June 2009 Canon has reportedly gathered about 220,000 metric tons of used toner cartridges – tons saved from ending up in landfills!

The Canon Toner Cartridge Recycling Program is described as “a zero-landfill program in which every component of the used cartridges that the company collects is reused, recycled or recovered”. Canon manufactures its cartridges such that closed-loop recycling is possible; the product is designed with the concept of recycling in mind. Hence, reusing the components is facilitated and plastic components may be recycled to make new products with “equivalent levels of quality.”

Below are key milestones that constitute 20 years of cartridge recycling by Canon:

1990 * Start of toner cartridge return program (Japan, U.S.A., Germany)
1991 * Start of recycling at Canon Dalian Business Machines (China)
1992 * Canon wins Grand Prize at 1st Global Environmental Awards (Japan)
* Start of closed-loop recycling for plastic
2002 * Start of recycling at Canon Ecology Industry (Japan)
2003 * Collection volume of toner cartridges reaches 100,000 metric tons
* Zero-landfill recycling system realized through four global recycling bases
2005 * Start of Bellmark return program (Japan)
2006 * Canon wins 3R Award from Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (Japan)

Canon has just launched four new inkjet printers; the multifunction Pixma MX870, Pixma MX350 and Pixma MX340 and the single function Pixma iP2702. The new printers went on sale in February in the USA and are aimed at the home, home office and small business market.

The top of the range MX870 is an all-in-one device with print, fax, copy, scan and wireless connectivity as standard. Print resolution is up to 9600 x 2400dpi and Canon’s new software, Auto Photo Fix II, makes it even easier for amateur photographers to print quality photos. The built-in software automatically categorizes the images, then optimizes each one for brightness and colour balance to ensure accurate skin tones and optimal exposure. Also included are Easy Photo Print and Easy Web Print which, like Auto Photo Fix II, are standard across the range. Dual Color Gamut Technology optimizes original hard copies so that copies stay true and Auto Scan Mode automatically recognizes an original scanned document and saves the appropriate settings. Again, these are both included on all three models.

The MX870 can print a borderless 6in x 4in photo in as little as 39 seconds, compared to 43 seconds for the MX340 and MX350, both of which have a maximum print resolution of 4800 x 1200dpi. Automatic duplex printing and a duplex automatic document feeder feature on the MX870 and MX350 but, at roughly half the cost of the range-topping model, if you want the MX340 to print on both sides, you’ll need to turn the paper over yourself.

The Pixma iP2702 is a cheap and cheerful entry level inkjet printer which nevertheless features the Easy Photo Print, Easy Web Print and Auto Photo Fix II software and also looks pretty stylish. As you’d probably expect, all four printers will support Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Canon is rolling out a couple of new multifunction color printers of the imageCLASS series — MF8050Cn and MF8350Cdn. The devices are tailored for small office and home users, and have an appealing price tag.

Canon MF8350Cdn prints as fast as 21 pages per minute in both color and black-and-white modes. Double-sided printing is supported; besides, this model is also a copier and fax machine.

imageCLASS MF8350Cdn is ideal for small companies given the standard paper cassette of 250-sheet capacity, a multipurpose 50-sheet paper tray and optional 250-sheet paper cassette.

Canon MF8050Cn is half as fast — only 12 ppm in monochrome and 8 pages in color. It bests fits the needs of small offices and home users.

Maximum resolution of the two printers is 600x600dpi. You can connect into network for use with several computers. The printers allow saving scanned documents directly on USB storage device.

imageCLASS MF8050Cn and MF8350Cdn sport 5-line display for menu navigations, feature Canon Auto Gradation Adjustment for color management and color cartridges usage monitoring for toner saving.

Speaking of the toner. Canon MF8050Cn printer uses the same 4 color toner cartridges as the MF8350Cdn does. Yellow, magenta, cyan (Canon 2659B001AA, Canon 2660B001AA and Canon 2661B001AA accordingly) have the toner yield of 2,900 pages at 5% average page coverage. The black cartridge — Canon 2662B001AA — is capable of printing 3,400 pages before it depletes.
